Honeybee by Steam Powered Giraffe is a perfect paradox. The band is composed of steampunk “automatons” with songs ranging stylistically from folk and funk to honky tonk and country. Their energetic live shows are filled with vaudeville humor, but their real power is in their singing: the trio possesses matching voices that flow together in canons and rounds like clockwork.
Through the eyes of emotionless robots, this single from The 2¢ Show conveys innocent infatuation and rejection better than your average coffeehouse singer-songwriter. The sense of darkness hands a lyrical connection to Big Star. By the end, you’ll feel like a helplessly infatuated teenager all over again.
Steam Powered Giraffe’s new album MK III comes out this fall. More information is at the band’s tumblr, http://officialsteampoweredgiraffe.tumblr.com/
